About this blog

In the early days of this blog, back when it was on Blogger, I wrote this post about what I hoped to accomplish by writing here. Rereading this post is what gave me the idea for the blog’s new name; the rest of it also holds up in terms of my intentions. I’m still just writing about whatever catches my eye at the moment. I hope at least some of it is interesting.

Why the move?

In my old job, I worked a lot with websites. I was webmaster of several, had reorganized several sites from the ground up and even created a couple new ones, and was beginning to get into the graphic design aspect of them. I don’t do any of that in my current job, and I kind of miss it.

Before I left that job, I talked to the web guy about expanding my skill set in hopes of pursuing freelance web work, and he recommended I learn WordPress. But I had a newborn, so that didn’t happen. I’ve kept his advice in the back of my mind, though, and am now finally taking the first step.

This blog was initially created in Blogger because my first blog was a Blogger blog, so there was zero learning curve. But as I built this blog, I began to wish Blogger had functionalities it does not possess. Everyone I talked to about these functionalities told me “WordPress.” So…here I am. Jumping into the fire and ready to learn.

The renaming came about when my old blog name’s URL was not available here. I was kind of tired of it anyway.

About me

Professionally, I am a copy editor. I have a full-time job and also freelance, both from my home office.* Other hats I have worn: writer, indexer, graphic designer/desktop publisher, web designer, webmaster.

I’m also, as you’ve probably guessed, a mom. If buzzwords are your thing, I’m a breastfeeding, cosleeping, pro-vax, vegetarian/vegan, gentle parenting, natural/mildly crunchy mom of two. If none of that made sense to you, know that I am a Gen X mom of two small kids, and I talk about them a LOT.

In my free time, I’m trying to find some free time. (I used to have hobbies, dammit!) I’m currently writing…what, three books now? Four? Something like that. I also love making crafts with my kids, making crafts without my kids, upcycling, and all things DIY. My kitchen is currently covered in drying paint projects, and I pretty much always have a half-finished crochet project going. I occasionally share photos of these things here.

I’m trying to get back in shape after a couple of c-sections. So I talk about fitness a fair bit. Don’t get the wrong idea; I was kind of a couch potato before the kids. But now I have to get in shape so I can keep up with them.

I also talk about a handful of health issues that affect me (allergies, endometriosis). And the impossible goal of finding the living room floor. Forgive me if I ramble on too much about the state of my house; I don’t leave it much, and occasionally it gets to me.

I used to read books. Grown-up books, I mean — I get to read kid books every day. I’m talking about the things with paper pages and no pictures. I’ve been trying to read the same grown-up book for over a year now. I miss reading.

But I love my kids. And I love my life. Messy though it may be.

*EDIT: As of 2016, I am self-employed. A proper LLC and everything. Still doing the same things, just with no company benefits. Wanna hire me?

*EDIT 2: As of 2022, I am now a full-time employee, and my LLC is once again a side hustle. Twice the stress, but at least I have benefits now. I am also a pandemic homeschooler, so education-related posts will crop up now and again.
